Tournament & Rules

The event consists of 12 players and two stages, preliminaries and knock-out

Preliminaries

11 rounds to decide the top  8

The top 8 advance to the knockout stage

The standings after the preliminaries determine who plays who in the knockout matches and also with which colour pieces they play

Knockout

Consists of Quarterfinals, Semi-Finals and a Final

All rounds are best-of-3 series of matches: the players play 3 matches (one per day); the player who wins 2 matches advances to the next round.

Each match consists of 4 rapid games

In case of a 2-2 tie, an Armageddon game shall be played

Draw offers are not allowed before both players have made 40 moves. This does not apply to Armageddon games.

The monks studied philosophy, music and literature whilst educating the community in cerebral and artisan skills such as masonry, carpentry and animal husbandry. We also know from the historic records that they even played chess!

Lindores Abbey's aim is to once more create a centre of learning where we can share the stories and skills from the past. We believe the past informs the future and would invite you to join us on this journey.
